Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the commonest developmental brain disorders and can continue into. Symptoms are - difficulty in staying focused and paying attention, difficulty in controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity). These symptoms affect child’s success in school, social relationships, or tasks at home. Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity are the key behaviors of ADHD.
To be diagnosed with the disorder, a child must have symptoms for 6 or more months and to a degree that is greater than other children of the same age. We make a diagnosis of ADHD, by meeting diagnostic criteria based on DSM-5. Child should be impaired in more than 1 major setting (e.g., in school and at home) for more than 6 months. We also look for any coexistent emotional or behavioral (e.g., anxiety, depressive, oppositional defiant, and conduct disorders), developmental (e.g., learning and language disorders or other neurodevelopmental disorders), or physical (e.g., tics, sleep apnea) conditions
We plan treatment based on age and associated conditions. Treatment is multidisciplinary and includes medication, occupational therapy for sensory integration, cognitive behavioral therapy, education and training, neurofeedback or a combination of treatments.
